Media activities in Afghanistan have been declining since the Taliban came to power on August 15, 2021.
Existing reports show a 70 percent drop in media activity in Afghanistan. The presence of women in the media in this country has decreased by more than 80 percent.
Mostly local radio stations in the provinces have been shut down due to financial problems as well as because of a ban by Taliban on how the media broadcasts.
A report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released in late 2021 shows that Mexico and Afghanistan are among the deadliest countries in the world for media activities.
According to the report by the organization, out of 700 women working in the media in Kabul, only 100 continue to work under economic and psychological pressure.
In 2021, six journalists were killed in Afghanistan, still no one claimed for the killings. The Taliban have said they are investigating the killings of the journalists.
The Social Association of Afghan Journalists at North - SAJNA, urges the Taliban not to impose further restrictions on the free media in the country, and to allow women to continue their free media activities.
SAJNA calls on the Taliban to prosecute the perpetrators of violence against journalists and to punish the perpetrators according to the law.
We also call for a widespread presence of women in the Afghan media, and the Taliban should not impose restrictions on the free dissemination of information.
